How to use the play designer

  1. 1

    Pick a formation

Trips, Doubles, Empty, I-Form, Singleback, Pistol, Bunch, Trey, or a flag football and 7-on-7 set. Every player is draggable, and you can add or remove anyone.

  2. 2

    Draw the routes

Tap a receiver and choose from the 17-route tree, or pick Draw and tap the field to place your own points. Switch a line to curved, or add a dashed option branch for a read.

  3. 3

    Add the defense

Drop in Cover 0 to Cover 6 or Tampa 2 over a 4-3, 3-4 or nickel front. Zones shade, man coverage links to the receiver, and every defender moves like your offense does.

  4. 4

    Label, export, share

Add a label for the read or the tag. Download a PNG for your playbook, print a clean sheet, or copy a link that holds the whole play. No account needed.

What's in the box

Built from the same play library our athletes train with, so the formations, routes and coverages are drawn the way coaches teach them.

Want the plays explained? Every position in the 440 learning library covers the routes, reads and coverages you can draw here.

Play designer FAQ

Is the play designer really free?

Yes. There is no account, no trial and no watermark. Draw as many plays as you want, export them as PNG, print them or share them by link. The 440 Football training app is a separate paid product; the designer stays free.

How do I save a play?

The play is written into the page address as you work, so the URL is the save file. Bookmark it or use Copy share link. Anyone who opens the link sees the play and can edit their own copy. Nothing is stored on our servers.

Can I use it for flag football or 7-on-7?

Yes. The formation menu has 5v5 and 7v7 flag sets and a 7-on-7 skelly look with no linemen, and you can add or remove players for any roster size.

Which defenses can I draw against?

Cover 0, Cover 1, Cover 2, Cover 3, Cover 4 (quarters), Tampa 2 and Cover 6, each over a 4-3, 3-4 or nickel front. Zones draw as shaded areas, man coverage as a dashed line to the receiver, and every defender can be moved or reassigned.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Drag with a finger, tap to add route points, pinch nothing: the field scales to the screen. Export and share work the same on mobile.

What is the difference between a route, a block and an option branch?

A route is a solid line with an arrow. A block ends in a flat bar (linemen and tight ends get this by default), pass protection is a dashed line, and an option branch is a dashed second path from the route's break point that shows the receiver's read.

Can I print a wristband or a playbook page?

Print gives you a clean landscape sheet with just the field and the play name. For wristbands, export the PNG and scale it in any document editor.

Build your position plan
